On Thursday 21st September the UWS’s Paisley Campus will host a Pride in Music event, featuring the music of Shaz Martin, Joseph Miller and Tess DeMarco.
Speaking with Paisley Radio, the UWS’s LGBTQIA+ Society president Alex said “The event is a fundraiser to raise funds for the Stonewall Scotland Charity and also to raise funds to support our society. The society exists to bring LGBTQIA+ students together, helping them where necessary in regards to supporting them coming out and directing them towards counselling where required, helping them realise they are not alone and campaign on issues affecting our community.
The list is endless to be honest, and all our our society executive team are students at UWS themselves who have volunteered alongside our own studies to support others to help them have a better standard of life, get advice & hopefully fight for full equality in every aspect of student life and beyond.
Our members are also students for the majority, however we are allowed 10% non students, that is currently UWS Alumni & some lecturers & staff. We also have space for people who perhaps didn’t choose higher education and went straight into fulltime work. We are here for them also if they require access to the local LGBTQIA+ community.”
“The event is the first for the society since we reformed in March this year, following a breakdown in its functioning due to the pandemic keeping people apart sadly. However we are back stronger than ever. Events such as this are extremely important to our community, especially in the current climate where it seems that a lot of negativity has been stirred up against our community. The like to be honest that hasn’t been seen in decades.”
The event is free to attend and open to all, with appearances from Joseph Miller, Tess De Marco and Shaz Martin, who appeared at this years’ MardiGla event at the Pride Hub.
